Big thank you and Updates on this week

Thank you :)

I just wanted to post a big thank you for all the wonderful e mails that I have received. It is not easy to go, but I feel very loved and appreciated and I couldn't ask for more. They say that you never forget your first class, and I can attest to that. I have been so lucky to work with your children, they have brought so much happiness, laughter and rich learning to each day. I do hope that if you ever would like to, feel free to reach out to let me know new experiences or accomplishments your child has went through throughout the years. I would always love to hear about them. I feel so lucky and thankful to have had your child be part of my class, it has been such an amazing year. Thank you for all the support, and I wish you all the best end to this school year, as well as a great summer.

This week in Literacy:

This week in literacy we have been focusing on thick and thin questions. We have been doing this in order to develop our comprehension and learning to ask deeper questions about the things we are reading, as this makes us stronger learners and we learn more by asking questions!

Our work in literacy has tied directly to our inquiry as we have been looking over problems that are happening in the Arctic. We used our knowledge of thick and thin questions, and started to ask a lot of thick questions so we could understand the problems further. we used our knowledge of heat in order to brainstorm!

After that, we started to brainstorm why these problems are problems! We also started to think about solutions and how we could think of ways to solve these problems.

We have been looking through the lens of an Environmental Scientist and beginning to ask questions about problems we see due to Heat in the Arctic:

We were fortunate to have an Environmental Scientist come and speak to us on Tuesday. He offered some insight into what an Environmental Scientist does, specifically in the Arctic. His job is to make sure old oil sights are clean and that the environment is returned back to the way it was prior to oil excavation:

Mr. Yoon travels to the Arctic to do his work. He shared with us some information about the land, the animals, and the transportation.

He talked to us about the melting permafrost, more frequent storm surges, and coastal erosion that is happening faster in the Arctic due to climate change.

In class we read an article about Permafrost and why it melting matters:

This week in Math: This week in math we worked on creating a solid understanding about solving double digit addition problems. We worked on stacking but also drawing out our understanding as another way of showing our answer. Image result for place value chart double digit anchor chartThis coming week we are going to be starting subtraction! We are so excited.
Robotics!!

We have been doing challenges with the Robots in order to learn how to code them to move, turn, blink, talk etc. Next week we will be doing a math challenge with our Robots in order to make a repeating or a growing pattern. We will record it and then upload our successful code to IRIS. Ask me what I enjoy about using the Robots?

Special Visit!
Today we had a presentation about teeth and oral health. We got to participate in many stations to learn about cleaning our teeth and keeping them extra healthy!

We also brought home a goody bag. Ask me to show you my dental swag!
