The Arctic, Transition into Temperature and Heat, Summarizing, Stacking and Regrouping
This week in Math:
This week in math we have continued to work on breaking down our stacking strategy. We have been given problems such as (35 + 22=) and have worked on building these double digit numbers on our place value mats and finding our answers through using our base ten blocks.
We did this to further our understanding, and demonstrate the importance of showing our work in order to show our understanding and use another strategy to check our answer.
Yesterday we started regrouping!
This time our ones can make a new ten. When that happens we can circle the new ten and move it on over to Ten Street! It is more efficient for it to live in the tens.
Don't forget to cross out your old amount of tens and add in the new one for a new number. Also don't forget that all those ones you circled create a new ten and leave the ones place. Don't recount them as they moved on to ten street!
Here is a great site for you to practice using base ten blocks with your child in order to solve some of these addition problems:

This week in Literacy:
This week in literacy we have continued to focus on summarizing. During this time, we have been working on pulling out the most important details out of the article to give us a good idea on what its about.
This is the graphic organizer we have been using this week:

Yesterday we started regrouping!
Here is a step by step way in which we learned about regrouping together.
First we build our two double-digit numbers. Eventually we will not need to build anymore and can just draw or represent our thinking with numerals but for now it helps us to understand what is happening with the place value when we need to regroup.

This is the graphic organizer we have been using this week:
Please read the Polar Bear Facts sheet and fill out the accompanying 3-2-1 graphic organizer. We will be using this 3-2-1 style of summarizing when we are reading, but also use in in many other instances when we are watching a video or when we are listening to a story.
This week in Inquiry:
Heat and Temperature
We have been starting to talk about what we know about Heat and Temperature. We grouped items into Hot or Cold based on things that we knew. We also noticed that some things such as a classroom might fall into hot or cold group depending on the season.
We also looked at home thermometers work and are excited to begin working with them and practicing using them to measure heat.

We have been talking about how we different tools are used to measure different things such as rulers, number lines, thermometers, scales etc.
The students are very interested in thermostat's and how they are used to turn up or down a house or buildings heat. We have been watching our classroom thermostat and recording the temperature it is at everyday. If you are able please visit your home thermostat with your child and write down what your home temperature is normally, plus visit where the furnace in your home is. We will be having a tour of the school to find out where our school heating comes from.
Arctic Stories
Today we read the Arctic story called "A Promise is a Promise" by Robert Munsch and Micheal Kusugak:
We had to pay attention and write down the following information we heard from the story:
Listening to all of these Arctic stories and thinking about the parts of the story will help us when we begin to create a storyboard for our own Arctic Story next week.
